The CNMC, Spain's competition authority, is reviewing the quality of the Universal Postal Service (SPU) provided by Correos for the year 2024. This review is part of the authority's ongoing oversight to ensure that Correos meets the quality standards set by the government.

Correos, designated by the state to provide the SPU, is required to maintain certain quality benchmarks while offering postal services at affordable prices. The SPU encompasses a range of services, including national and cross-border mail, ordinary and certified letters, postcards, and parcels weighing up to 20 kg.

In its latest assessment, the CNMC noted that while Correos met the response time objectives for complaints and the delivery timelines for some types of mail, it failed to meet several key indicators related to the security of shipments and the ratio of complaints to total deliveries. This marks the fourth year the CNMC has conducted this review under the new quality objectives established in June 2021.

The CNMC has recommended that the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility closely examine the discrepancies affecting complaint numbers and shipment security. Correos' failure to meet these quality standards could lead to a reduction in the financial compensation it receives for fulfilling its public service obligations.
