Norwegian Competition Authority Receives Record Tips on Antitrust Violations

31.03.2025 | Norwegian competition authority

In 2024, the Norwegian competition authority received 455 tips regarding potential antitrust violations, highlighting increased awareness of competition law among businesses.

The Norwegian competition authority, known as Konkurransetilsynet, has reported a significant increase in tips related to potential antitrust violations, receiving 455 submissions in 2024 alone. This surge is attributed to a broad campaign aimed at raising awareness about competition law and encouraging businesses to report illegal activities.

According to Gjermund Nese, the acting director of the authority, the influx of tips indicates that the public is becoming more aware of where to report suspected breaches of competition law. The tips have primarily focused on illegal collaborations and the abuse of dominant market positions.

A previous survey conducted by the authority revealed that approximately one in three business leaders believe illegal collaboration is occurring in Norway, with common violations including price-fixing, information exchange, and market division.

In 2024, Konkurransetilsynet took action against three entities in an investigation within the grocery market, concluded an investigation in the pharmacy sector, and initiated a new investigation in the driving school market.

The authority also processed 151 merger notifications in 2024, with 98% of these being resolved within 25 working days. This marks an increase from the previous year, which saw 113 notifications. The authority intervened in the acquisition of Vitek Miljø by Norva24 Vest, a decision that was upheld by the Competition Appeals Board.

Nese emphasized that the rise in merger notifications and the efficiency of the merger control process contribute to a well-functioning competitive environment, saving resources for businesses.

For more detailed information on these cases and the authority's work, the annual report for 2024 is available.
