The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has reported significant achievements in 2025, providing over 3.3 billion HUF in fine reductions to compliant businesses and 800 million HUF in direct compensation to consumers affected by violations. This initiative has helped retain funds within the Hungarian economy.

Throughout the year, the GVH made decisions in 33 cases involving 67 companies, identifying violations in two-thirds of these cases. A total of 3 billion 782.6 million HUF in fines was imposed on 29 companies, with a strong focus on uncovering unfair commercial practices.

The GVH also closed several major cartel cases, including those involving companies in the healthcare sector and a waste collection cartel, which resulted in fines exceeding 1.5 billion HUF. The authority continues to investigate the Nitrogénművek Zrt. for cartel behavior.

In its efforts to preserve jobs, the GVH encourages cooperation from companies, allowing them to choose various forms of collaboration to increase available fine reductions. The authority's president, Csaba Balázs Rigó, emphasized the importance of active cooperation to expedite procedures and achieve significant fine reductions.

The GVH has prioritized investigations into global technology companies and online platforms, achieving historic commitments in the Microsoft case and initiating new proceedings against Booking.com and Airbnb. The authority also addressed issues related to phishing advertisements with Google and secured over 1 billion HUF in compensation for consumers from About You.

In response to the rapid spread of artificial intelligence technologies, the GVH joined the Hungarian Artificial Intelligence Council to address market competition and consumer impacts, particularly focusing on protecting families and children in the digital space.

In 2025, the GVH handled nearly 2000 consumer complaints, with a significant portion related to online commerce and retail. The authority took decisive action in the food retail sector, regulating companies like Spar and Lidl, and initiated new investigations into various retailers.

The GVH also focused on the aviation sector, particularly low-cost airlines, with WizzAir refunding thousands of Hungarian passengers and new proceedings initiated against both WizzAir and Ryanair.

Internationally, the GVH emphasized connectivity and the protection of Hungarian national interests, hosting meetings with competition authorities and receiving multiple recognitions at the annual global competition meeting.

In total, the GVH conducted four expedited sectoral investigations in 2025, addressing issues in food retail and public procurement, while also raising awareness about recurring fraud related to vacation rights.
