The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated investigations into five companies—Autotrader, Feefo, Dignity, Just Eat, and Pasta Evangelists—over concerns related to fake and misleading online reviews. This action is part of a broader effort to ensure consumer protection and transparency in the online reviews ecosystem.

Online reviews significantly influence consumer decisions, with research indicating that 89% of people rely on them when making purchasing choices. The CMA's investigations focus on various practices that may violate consumer law, including the moderation of negative reviews, the solicitation of positive reviews from staff, inflated star ratings, and undisclosed incentives for favorable reviews.

While the CMA has not yet determined whether any laws have been broken, the investigations are part of a larger initiative to address harmful practices in the online review space. The CMA's new powers under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 allow it to take action without going through the courts, aiming to enhance compliance and consumer trust.

As the investigations progress, the CMA will engage with the companies involved to gather evidence and assess compliance with consumer protection laws. If violations are found, the CMA can impose significant fines and require changes to business practices.
