On August 31, the European Commission officially recognized ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine (VLOSE) and both Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOP). This designation applies to services that have at least 45 million active monthly users within the European Union.

As a result of this classification, these platforms are now required to ensure compliance with additional obligations set forth by the Digital Services Act (DSA) within a four-month timeframe. The DSA aims to create a safer and more responsible online environment by imposing general rules that all large platforms must follow, along with stricter regulations for those classified as VLOP and VLOSE.

The DSA includes requirements such as risk management, crisis response, independent audits, user options to avoid profiling-based recommendations, data sharing with authorities and researchers, adherence to codes of conduct, and monitoring fees.
