The Hungarian competition authority, Gazdasági Versenyhivatal (GVH), has issued a new fine of 225 million HUF to eMAG, a Romanian-based e-commerce platform, for not fulfilling its commitments to support Hungarian businesses. This follows a previous fine of 200 million HUF in 2021 for similar issues, totaling over 700 million HUF in penalties for the company.

The GVH's investigation revealed that eMAG had promised to implement a support program worth nearly 3 billion HUF for Hungarian businesses but failed to deliver on several aspects of this commitment. The authority noted that the results of the measures taken were below expectations and did not sufficiently enhance the online presence of Hungarian companies.

During the latest proceedings, eMAG acknowledged its shortcomings and waived its right to appeal. The GVH emphasized the importance of companies adhering to their commitments and warned that failure to comply could result in significant fines.

This recent fine is the second-largest follow-up penalty in the history of the GVH, highlighting the authority's strict enforcement of compliance with its decisions. eMAG had previously been fined 235 million HUF in January 2026 for misleading Hungarian consumers, contributing to the total fines accumulated over the years.
