The competition authorities from G7 member states, including Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Commission, met in Tokyo on November 7 and 8, 2023. The meeting aimed to discuss and tackle the challenges posed by competition policy in the digital era.

During the meeting, AGCM President Roberto Rustichelli announced that the next G7 Competition Summit will take place in Rome in 2024. This summit will specifically focus on emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, highlighting the importance of these topics in the context of competition law.

The Italian Competition Authority, under President Rustichelli's leadership, contributed to the meeting by updating the Compendium of approaches to improving competition in digital markets. This document serves as a reference for future cooperation among competition authorities and policymakers, detailing the key aspects of their work in digital markets.

Additionally, an update on legislative and regulatory initiatives for digital markets, prepared by the OECD at the request of the Japanese government, was presented during the meeting. Rustichelli emphasized the need for G7 competition agencies to collaborate on understanding artificial intelligence and its potential competition issues, aiming to exchange knowledge and experiences in this crucial area.
