The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has officially designated Google with strategic market status (SMS) in the realm of general search and search advertising services. This decision follows an investigation initiated on January 14, 2025, and is part of the UK's new digital markets competition regime aimed at fostering competition and innovation.

After consulting with over 80 stakeholders and engaging with Google, the CMA concluded that Google possesses substantial and entrenched market power, with over 90% of searches in the UK conducted through its platform. The designation does not imply any wrongdoing but allows the CMA to consider targeted interventions to ensure fair competition in the market.

While Google's Gemini AI assistant is excluded from this designation, other AI-based features like AI Overviews are included. The CMA plans to consult on potential interventions later this year, emphasizing the importance of promoting competition in digital markets to support business growth and consumer confidence.
