The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has released its draft Annual Plan, marking the first phase of its new Strategy for 2026 to 2029. This plan emphasizes the importance of promoting competition and protecting consumers, with the ultimate goal of fostering economic growth and enhancing household prosperity.

The CMA's priorities are built around five core objectives that reflect both continuity and change. These objectives include advocating for effective competition, championing consumer rights, enhancing the CMA's advisory role to the government, contributing to a favorable regulatory environment, and delivering tangible results for the UK economy.

Central to the CMA's approach is the 4Ps framework—pace, predictability, proportionality, and process—aimed at reducing business burdens and boosting investor confidence. Chief Executive Sarah Cardell highlighted the focus on consumer advocacy, especially in light of cost-of-living challenges, while Chair Doug Gurr emphasized accountability and transparency in the CMA's operations.

The draft plan outlines key areas of focus for 2026 to 2027, including consumer protection, market interventions, advocacy for regulatory changes, competition enforcement, digital market regulations, and merger control. The CMA aims to enhance consumer trust, address anti-competitive practices, and streamline merger processes.

The CMA is inviting feedback on the draft Annual Plan until February 18, 2026, with a final version expected to be published in March 2026. A webinar will be held on February 5, 2026, to engage with stakeholders on the plan.
