On June 25, 2025, FN Browning Group (FNBG) notified the French competition authority of its intention to acquire control of Sofisport, a significant player in the ammunition and firearms sector.
FNBG, based in Belgium, specializes in manufacturing and distributing firearms and ammunition for military and law enforcement, as well as for hunting and sport shooting. Sofisport, a French company, produces cartridges for hunting and sport shooting, offering both white-label and own-brand products, and also manufactures cartridge components.
The French competition authority conducted a thorough examination of the ammunition and firearms markets, specifically focusing on civilian use, hunting, and sport shooting. It defined relevant markets including the manufacture and wholesale distribution of cartridges and firearms.
After consulting with market players, the authority found no anticompetitive risks in the markets where FNBG and Sofisport compete. The combined market share of the new entity was deemed limited, and the transaction was not expected to significantly alter market dynamics.
The authority also assessed potential vertical effects, particularly concerning the manufacture of white-label cartridges. It concluded that competitors would still have access to sourcing cartridges due to the presence of other international manufacturers. Additionally, the authority ruled out any risk of market foreclosure for competitors in the production of white-label cartridges.
Finally, the authority dismissed concerns regarding conglomerate effects from potential bundling strategies, citing the limited market presence of the new entity and the independent purchasing behavior of consumers. Consequently, the authority cleared the acquisition without any conditions.
