The VII. Hungarian Competition Law Forum took place in Budapest, highlighting key issues such as the protection of families and children, the implications of artificial intelligence in competition law, and the enforcement of private law in this context. The event was organized by the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH), the Hungarian Competition Law Association (MVE), and the Pázmány Péter Catholic University.
GVH President Csaba Balázs Rigó emphasized that digitalization and the rise of artificial intelligence are transforming competition and consumer protection laws. The forum featured international participants, including a video message from Andrew N. Ferguson, Chairman of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and a presentation by Andreas Mundt, President of the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt).
This annual event serves as a platform for domestic and international representatives to discuss the most pressing topics in competition law and policy through professional presentations and panel discussions. This year marked the seventh edition of the forum, held at the Pázmány Péter Catholic University.
During the opening remarks, Rigó noted that the current period will be remembered as a transformative era for competition law, competition policy, and consumer protection law. He pointed out the importance of addressing issues related to digital platforms, artificial intelligence, data collection and usage, innovation encouragement, and market regulation.
The forum focused on three main themes: the current state of artificial intelligence and digital markets, challenges in private law enforcement, and the targeted protection of families and children against unfair commercial practices and risks in the digital space. The GVH also introduced a new publication titled 'Private Law Enforcement in Competition Law' as part of its 'Competition Mirror Book Series'.
In conclusion, Rigó stressed the need to protect Hungarian families and children in the digital realm, underscoring the importance of addressing these challenges in competition law.
