The Hungarian Competition Authority fined Wizz Air for misleading passengers by not disclosing all service options available for purchase, steering them towards more expensive packages.

02.08.2024 | Hungarian competition authority

The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) fined Wizz Air approximately 307 million forints for engaging in unfair commercial practices by not disclosing all service options available for purchase separately, thus leading consumers towards more expensive packages. The airline also failed to communicate in a timely manner certain additional services that could be purchased individually.

The GVH initiated the competition supervision procedure against Wizz Air Hungary Zrt. in early 2023 due to suspicions of withholding significant information on its online platforms to influence ticket buyers towards more expensive options.

Considering the violations, the GVH imposed a total fine of over 307 million forints on the airline. Despite Wizz Air offering commitments during the proceedings, the GVH did not accept them due to doubts about their feasibility and effectiveness in addressing the original purpose of the case.
