The European Commission has accepted legally binding commitments from Microsoft to address competition concerns regarding its Teams platform, aimed at promoting fair competition in the collaboration tools market.

The European Commission has officially accepted commitments from Microsoft to resolve competition concerns related to its Teams collaboration platform. These commitments will be legally binding under EU antitrust regulations.

The Commission's concerns stemmed from Microsoft's practice of tying Teams to its Office 365 and Microsoft 365 productivity suites, which was found to potentially restrict competition in the market for cloud-based communication tools.

To address these concerns, Microsoft has agreed to offer versions of its productivity suites without Teams at a lower price, allow customers to switch to these versions, ensure interoperability with competing tools, and facilitate data portability for users.

Following a market test of these commitments, Microsoft further amended its proposals, including increasing the price difference between suites with and without Teams and enhancing transparency regarding interoperability and data portability.

The commitments will remain in effect for seven years, with certain aspects lasting ten years, and will be monitored by a trustee to ensure compliance. The Commission concluded that these measures would adequately address its competition concerns.
