The Polish competition authority, UOKiK, is leading the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) and is hosting its first conference in Warsaw from October 4-6, 2023. This event marks Poland's return to the presidency of ICPEN after 17 years and aims to strengthen global cooperation among institutions protecting consumer rights.

The conference's central theme is 'Empowering Responsible Consumer Choices,' emphasizing the need for synergy among networks and organizations that protect vulnerable market participants. UOKiK President Tomasz Chróstny highlighted the importance of coordinated actions to enhance the enforcement of consumer rights in an increasingly digital world.

During the conference, UOKiK will launch a project focused on 'Online Marketing,' addressing issues related to digital marketing practices. The rise of the internet and e-commerce has led to innovative strategies that can confuse consumers, especially when faced with deceptive practices such as fake reviews and hidden commercial content.

Poland is also leading a program aimed at investigating the e-market for new financial services and associated scams, particularly focusing on vulnerable groups like seniors and younger consumers. The conference will also address the implications of artificial intelligence on consumer protection and the need for collaboration between public and private entities.

Environmental and ethical considerations are also on the agenda, with discussions on misleading claims regarding eco-friendly products. UOKiK is committed to ensuring that consumers making environmentally conscious choices are not misled.

As the conference unfolds, UOKiK emphasizes the importance of vigilance against unfair business practices, especially during times of economic crisis. The event in Warsaw is the first of two planned meetings, with another set for May 2024 in Gdańsk, aimed at further strengthening international cooperation in consumer protection.
