The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released a new weekly fuel price monitoring update, revealing significant discrepancies in petrol and diesel prices across Australian capital cities. The report highlights that prices have risen rapidly, often matching or exceeding wholesale price increases, particularly following the onset of the current Middle Eastern conflict.
According to the ACCC, Darwin recorded the highest daily average retail prices for petrol and diesel, while Canberra had the lowest. The report indicates that Perth experienced the largest increase in average retail petrol prices, rising by 59.5 cents per litre between 20 February and 11 March. The ACCC is concerned about the rapid price changes and their impact on consumers and businesses.
ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey emphasized the need for transparency from fuel retailers regarding their pricing strategies. The ACCC has reached out to major petrol companies, including 7-Eleven and bp, requesting urgent explanations for the price hikes. The commission is prepared to take action against any misleading or deceptive conduct related to these price increases.
In addition to monitoring prices, the ACCC is also addressing concerns about fuel availability in regional areas. The commission is engaging with industry participants to ensure effective fuel distribution and is ready to utilize its authorisation powers to benefit the public.
The ACCC's analysis shows that retail prices have increased almost immediately in response to rising wholesale prices, deviating from the typical lagged response. This has raised questions about the practices of petrol retailers, who are expected to justify their pricing decisions to the public.
