The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has conducted an investigation revealing that 75% of retailers are presenting their discounts inaccurately, particularly online. This misleading practice often involves inflated 'was'-prices that make discounts appear larger than they are.

As the holiday season approaches, including events like Black Friday and Sinterklaas, ACM is taking action against retailers that fail to comply with pricing regulations. The authority has identified misleading price presentations at 18 out of 24 major retailers across various sectors, including furniture, clothing, and consumer electronics.

Fleur Severijns from ACM's Consumer Department emphasized the importance of honest pricing, stating that misleading discounts not only deceive consumers but also create unfair competition for compliant businesses. ACM is actively confronting non-compliant retailers and has the authority to impose sanctions.

To protect themselves, consumers are advised to verify discounts before making purchases. ACM's campaign, 'Check before you buy,' encourages shoppers to be vigilant about steep discounts and to compare prices across different sellers to ensure they are getting genuine deals.
