The Competition Bureau of Canada has obtained court orders to gather information for its investigation into Mérieux NutriSciences' acquisition of Bureau Veritas' food testing business. This acquisition has significant implications for the food testing market in Canada.

Prior to the acquisition, both Mérieux NutriSciences, through Silliker Canada, and Bureau Veritas, through Bureau Veritas Canada, were major players in the food testing sector. The acquisition has allowed Mérieux NutriSciences to double its presence by acquiring seven food testing labs across Canada.

The Bureau's investigation focuses on whether this acquisition could substantially lessen competition in the food testing market. Key concerns include potential price increases, reduced service quality, and the ability of smaller companies to compete effectively in a more concentrated market.

The Federal Court has mandated Silliker Canada, its US affiliate, and Bureau Veritas Canada to provide relevant records and information for the investigation. The Competition Bureau has a three-year window post-acquisition to address any competition concerns, which may include reversing the acquisition.
