The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released its weekly fuel price monitoring update, revealing that diesel prices are rising faster than petrol prices across Australia’s largest cities. As of March 25, the average retail diesel price reached 303.5 cents per litre, marking a 10% increase from the previous week.

In comparison, regular unleaded petrol prices averaged 252.2 cents per litre, reflecting an 8% increase. The ACCC noted that the international benchmark prices for diesel and petrol have also risen, with diesel prices increasing by approximately 17% and petrol by about 9%.

ACCC Deputy Chair Mick Keogh emphasized the agency's close monitoring of the fuel market during this volatile period, expressing concerns over supply issues affecting various locations, including capital city suburbs and remote areas. The ACCC has granted urgent interim authorisation to the Australian Institute of Petroleum to coordinate efforts to manage these supply chain challenges.

Consumer reports to the ACCC have surged, with over 3,000 submissions regarding fuel prices received between March 1 and 24. Issues raised include frequent price increases and service stations running out of fuel. The ACCC is prioritizing any potential breaches of competition and consumer laws related to these reports.
