Hungarian Competition Authority Fines Mobilredfox for Misleading Promotions

The Hungarian competition authority has imposed a fine of 49.9 million HUF on Mobilredfox due to systemic deficiencies in its promotional practices.

The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has fined Mobilredfox Kft. 49.9 million HUF for engaging in unfair commercial practices related to its pricing and promotional activities. The company, which specializes in selling mobile phone cases and accessories, acknowledged the violations and waived its right to appeal.

The investigation, initiated in the autumn of 2024, focused on the company's pricing display and promotional practices on its website. The GVH suspected that Mobilredfox had systemic issues, including misleading promotions and frequent, random changes to the prices marked as original (crossed-out prices), as well as a lack of internal rules regarding the application of original and promotional prices.

The GVH's suspicions were confirmed, leading to the conclusion that Mobilredfox had indeed engaged in unfair commercial practices. From March 9, 2023, to August 19, 2025, the company operated a pricing and discount display system that failed to provide consumers with accurate information about available discounts.

During the proceedings, Mobilredfox cooperated with the GVH, admitted to the violations, and committed to improving its promotional practices. The GVH has mandated these improvements, which will be subject to follow-up evaluations by the authority as necessary. Considering these factors, the GVH imposed a fine of 49.9 million HUF on the company.

The GVH has reiterated the importance for businesses to adhere to clearer pricing display rules established since May 2022, ensuring consumers can make informed decisions regarding promotional offers. The authority has been paying special attention to pricing practices in recent years, with other companies like CCC and Answear also making commitments as a result of GVH actions, while About You has paid over 1 billion HUF to Hungarian consumers due to misleading promotions.
