The ACCC plans to meet with fuel market participants to demand explanations for their pricing behavior during the ongoing Middle Eastern crisis.

In an effort to enhance transparency, the ACCC will begin publishing weekly market updates, allowing consumers to stay informed about fuel pricing trends. ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey emphasized the importance of monitoring pricing behavior closely and indicated that the commission would take action against any misleading practices by retailers.

The ACCC is also addressing distribution issues related to diesel in regional and rural Australia, recognizing the critical role of diesel supply for primary producers and transport businesses. The commission is open to authorizing conduct that provides a net public benefit, such as coordination agreements for distribution.

In a proactive approach, the ACCC has reached out to petrol retailers for information regarding recent price hikes and is convening an emergency meeting to discuss these issues. The commission is inviting consumer representatives to participate in these discussions to ensure transparency and accountability.
