The National Anti-Scam Centre is advising Australians to exercise caution while shopping, gifting, and traveling this festive season, as scammers are expected to exploit the holiday rush.

Common scams include fake retail websites, delivery notifications, and fraudulent scratch-off cards that promise prizes in exchange for fees. The Centre has noted a rise in reports of online shopping scams, with significant financial losses reported.

ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe emphasized the importance of taking time to verify messages and offers, as scammers often create a sense of urgency to trick individuals into providing personal information or making payments.

With the holiday season approaching, the Centre is also preparing for an increase in road toll scams and unlicensed online gambling scams, which can lead to significant financial losses for unsuspecting victims.

To combat these scams, the National Anti-Scam Centre has released a checklist for consumers, encouraging them to treat unexpected messages with caution, verify the legitimacy of offers, and protect their personal information.
