The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has taken action to address concerns regarding suppliers who cancelled heating oil orders when prices surged, potentially breaching contracts with customers.

As a result of the CMA's intervention, suppliers have agreed to compensate affected customers who had to purchase replacement heating oil at significantly higher prices. The CMA estimates that customers may have incurred additional costs ranging from £150 to £350.

Customers whose suppliers are part of the compensation scheme will receive payments covering the difference between their original and replacement orders. Those who did not buy replacement oil will have their original orders honored at the agreed price.

Eligible customers will be contacted directly by the CMA, and around 800 customers have already been notified. For those seeking compensation for replacement purchases, evidence such as receipts will be required.

Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA, emphasized the necessity of heating oil for many households and the importance of rectifying the situation for affected customers.
