On 25 September 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a determination granting authorisation AA1000699. This authorisation allows the Australian Payments Network Limited (AusPayNet) and its current and future members to coordinate efforts in migrating the Australian card payments system.

The migration involves transitioning from the existing Triple Data Encryption Standard to the more secure Advanced Encryption Standard. This change aims to enhance the security of sensitive card payment data, as the Advanced Encryption Standard is recognized for its efficiency and security compared to the current standard.

The ACCC's authorisation permits the involved parties to make agreements regarding the migration process and to share information to monitor progress, address issues, and develop solutions. This collaborative effort is solely focused on facilitating the transition to the Advanced Encryption Standard.

The authorisation granted by the ACCC is valid for a period of 8 years, ensuring a structured approach to the migration process.
