The Digital Platform Regulators Forum (DP-REG) has published a working paper focused on immersive technologies, also known as extended reality (XR). This paper explores the benefits and regulatory challenges posed by these technologies, which allow users to interact with digital content in three dimensions.

Immersive technologies have the potential to enhance various sectors, including gaming, retail, and education, by improving digital literacy and accessibility. However, the paper also highlights significant concerns, particularly regarding extensive data collection that may involve personal and sensitive information, leading to potential harms in immersive environments.

This working paper aligns with DP-REG’s strategic priorities for 2024–26, emphasizing the need to understand and address the benefits, risks, and harms associated with emerging technologies. It aims to inform broader policy discussions on digital platform regulation.

This paper is the fourth in a series by DP-REG, which has previously examined multimodal foundation models, large language models, and the risks associated with algorithms. Each member of DP-REG contributed to this paper, reinforcing their commitment to a cohesive regulatory approach in Australia.
