European Authorities Crack Down on Airlines' Misleading Sustainability Claims

29.04.2024 | Dutch competition authority

European consumer authorities are demanding that 20 airlines in Europe stop using false sustainability claims within 30 days, following a complaint by the European Consumer Organization.

European consumer authorities, led by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), have called out 20 European airlines for misleading sustainability claims, such as exaggerating the impact of 'sustainable aviation fuel' and offering CO2 compensation without clarifying its limited effect. The airlines have 30 days to adjust or remove these claims, or face potential sanctions. The action is part of a broader European collaboration to ensure consumer protection and fair competition, with ACM emphasizing the importance of honest sustainability communications for informed consumer choices and fair competition among businesses.
