The Norwegian competition authority has submitted a response to the Ministry of Transport regarding a report on the future of postal services. They stress the importance of fostering competition to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness in public procurement.

Vegard Aandal-Nilsen, acting department director at the competition authority, highlighted that competition is a crucial tool in public procurement. By implementing tender competitions for state-compensated postal services, the government can avoid overpaying for unprofitable services.

Furthermore, the authority agrees with the report's findings that a decline in letter deliveries necessitates a reevaluation of what constitutes a sustainable postal service. The content of the delivery obligation should be adapted to reflect the changing needs of the population, ensuring that societal resources are utilized effectively.
