The Bundeskartellamt has approved REWE's acquisition of a 50% stake in beverage wholesaler Trinks, concluding that the deal will not harm competition.

The Bundeskartellamt has cleared REWE's planned acquisition of 50% of the shares in Trinks GmbH and Trinks Süd GmbH after a thorough investigation. The authority's assessment focused on potential market foreclosure effects that could arise from REWE's shareholding in Trinks, a leading beverage wholesaler for food retailers.
Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt, stated that the investigation found no serious competition concerns regarding the merger. The authority concluded that significant foreclosure effects are unlikely, both in terms of other beverage wholesalers' access to REWE as a customer and the access of REWE's competitors to Trinks' services.
Trinks operates 16 storage and logistics facilities across Germany, supplying food retailers with a variety of beverages. The company is currently owned by Bitburger Braugruppe, Krombacher Brauerei, and the Warsteiner group, which will retain the same shareholding as REWE post-acquisition. The Bundeskartellamt noted that Trinks has numerous competitors, including Deutsche Getränke-Logistik and PROFI System-Getränke-Logistik, ensuring that REWE's competitors have sufficient alternatives.
The authority also highlighted that beverage manufacturers can supply retailers directly, which limits potential foreclosure effects. Additionally, EDEKA, a major competitor of REWE, is developing its own beverage logistics, further mitigating concerns about market foreclosure. Overall, the acquisition is not expected to significantly impede effective competition, and the potential access to competitor information does not raise any competition concerns.
