The European Commission has initiated a public consultation regarding the first review of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to rebalance the relationship between major online platforms and their users. This consultation will be open until September 24, 2025, allowing various stakeholders, including EU citizens, small and medium enterprises, and professional organizations, to provide their insights on the DMA's impact and efficiency.

The DMA is designed to ensure fair competition in the digital market by imposing obligations on large operators that control access to these markets. Key requirements include enabling free and effective interoperability of products from other providers, offering alternatives to paid subscriptions for users who opt out of personalized advertising, and refraining from self-preferencing in search results.

Based on the feedback received, the Commission will prepare a report by May 3, 2026, and the impact of the DMA will be reassessed every three years. The DMA specifically targets 23 platforms operated by seven designated gatekeepers, including major companies like Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Booking, Meta, and Microsoft, each with significant user bases in the EU.

The European Commission holds exclusive authority to enforce these regulations, with the Luxembourg competition authority available to assist in inspections or hearings as necessary.
