Dutch regulators, police, and prosecution services express strong support for a European ban on AI nudify apps and websites, aiming to combat the misuse of such tools for blackmail and exploitation.

The Dutch competition authority, along with the Dutch Police and the Dutch Public Prosecution Service, has welcomed a proposed European ban on AI nudify tools, which are apps and websites that digitally undress individuals in images. These tools have been linked to serious issues such as blackmail and exploitation of victims.

Current legislation allows for action against individual offenders but does not adequately address the root problem of these tools. The involved organizations are advocating for a complete ban on nudify tools to enable effective enforcement against their creators and distributors.

Manon Leijten from the Dutch competition authority emphasized the harmful nature of these tools and the need for close cooperation among regulators, police, and prosecution services to combat this issue effectively. They are also exploring ways to enhance digital awareness among minors regarding the legal implications of using such tools.

In anticipation of the ban, the authorities will utilize existing legal frameworks to mitigate harm caused by nudify tools and encourage victims to report incidents to facilitate enforcement actions.
