On January 16, 2026, the Board of Directors of the Portuguese competition authority, AdC, made a significant decision regarding merger operation 89/2025, which involved the companies Alcon and STAAR.

Exercising its powers under the relevant statutes, AdC declared the merger analysis procedure terminated. This decision was made in accordance with Articles 46 of the Competition Law and 95 of the Administrative Procedure Code.

The termination indicates that the notified concentration operation will not be carried out, effectively closing the case without further investigation or remedies.
