The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced a set of commitments from Apple and Google designed to enhance fairness, transparency, and certainty for UK businesses that depend on app stores. These commitments are part of the CMA's ongoing efforts to regulate the digital markets following the designation of both companies under the digital markets competition regime.

Among the key commitments are improvements in app review processes, ensuring that apps are reviewed fairly and without discrimination against competing applications. Additionally, the companies will work to rank apps objectively and safeguard app data collected during reviews. Apple has also agreed to facilitate developers' requests for interoperable access to its mobile operating systems, which is expected to foster innovation.

The CMA will monitor the implementation of these commitments closely, with a focus on metrics such as app review times and the outcomes of interoperability requests. This initiative aims to bolster the UK's app economy, which is significant for the country's GDP and job market.

These commitments represent the first steps in a broader strategy to improve app store services and ensure fair competition in the digital marketplace. The CMA is inviting public feedback on these proposals until March 2026, with the commitments set to take effect in April 2026.
