The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has officially designated Aldi, Lidl GB, and Lidl NI as 'Large Grocery Retailers' (LGRs) under the Groceries Market Investigation (Controlled Land) Order 2010. This designation aligns Aldi and Lidl with other major supermarkets like Asda and Tesco, which have been subject to these regulations since 2010.

The primary aim of the Order is to prevent large grocery retailers from using land agreements to hinder the establishment of competing supermarkets nearby. This includes prohibiting restrictive covenants and exclusivity arrangements that could limit competition. The CMA's decision is intended to enhance consumer choice and ensure competitive pricing in the grocery market.

In August, the CMA sought feedback on its proposal to designate Aldi and Lidl, receiving support from major competitors such as Morrisons and Waitrose. Notably, Aldi and Lidl did not submit any representations against the proposal.

Once designated, these retailers are barred from including prohibited restrictions in new agreements, and existing agreements may be reviewed by the CMA upon request from interested parties. This regulatory move aims to create a more level playing field in the grocery sector.

Juliette Enser, Executive Director for Competition Enforcement and Markets at the CMA, emphasized that the new rules will prevent large supermarket chains from blocking the opening of rival stores, ultimately benefiting consumers with better choices and prices.

The UK grocery market is valued at approximately £222.7 billion, with Aldi and Lidl ranking among the top five retailers by market share, highlighting their significant presence in the industry.
