The Hungarian competition authority, known as GVH, has fined Foodora, an online food delivery platform, over 35 million HUF for deceiving consumers during a promotional campaign in the fall of 2023. The company advertised a 2000 HUF discount and free delivery but failed to disclose that these benefits were only applicable to orders exceeding 6000 HUF.
The investigation began in December 2023, focusing on the promotional activities of Delivery Hero Hungary Kft., the operator of Foodora. The GVH found that the company did not provide adequate information regarding the conditions for using the discount coupon, which constituted an unfair commercial practice.
In addition to the fine for misleading advertising, the GVH imposed a further 20 million HUF procedural fine due to Foodora's delays in the investigation process. The company has already paid both fines to the central budget.
The GVH has emphasized the importance of clear communication regarding promotional offers, especially when conditions apply. This case serves as a reminder for businesses to comply with their obligations to provide accurate information to consumers.
