A recent study by the Dutch competition authority ACM indicates that over 300,000 households and small businesses could save significant amounts by switching to lower-capacity electricity connections.

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has conducted a study revealing that more than 300,000 households and small businesses in the Netherlands are using higher-capacity electricity connections than necessary. This situation leads to unnecessary expenses, as higher-capacity connections are significantly more expensive than standard ones.

In 2026, the average cost for a standard 3x25 Ampère connection is projected to be around 360 euros per year, while higher-capacity connections can cost at least 1,800 euros annually. The study found that many households and businesses consume less than 15,000 kWh per year, making a standard connection sufficient for their needs.

Specifically, the study identified 266,000 households and businesses with connections exceeding 3x25 Ampère but consuming less than 15,000 kWh annually. These users could save at least 1,400 euros per year by downgrading to a standard connection. Additionally, around 48,000 households and businesses consuming between 15,000 and 25,000 kWh could save nearly 1,000 euros by switching to a 3x35 Ampère connection.

ACM emphasizes that high-capacity connections are only necessary for users with multiple heavy appliances operating simultaneously. Households can manage their electricity consumption more efficiently to avoid the need for higher-capacity connections. The study also highlights the importance of checking connection types on annual energy bills and provides resources for consumers to determine their needs.

While downgrading connections can lead to savings, ACM advises caution, as switching back to a higher-capacity connection may involve waiting lists due to grid congestion. The authority does not anticipate significant grid capacity being freed up from these downgrades.
