21.01.2025 | UK competition authority

Doug Gurr has been appointed as the interim Chair of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to enhance growth in the UK economy, succeeding Marcus Bokkerink.

Doug Gurr has been appointed as the interim Chair of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) as of January 21, 2025. His appointment aims to support the UK government's efforts to boost economic growth and remove barriers for businesses.

Gurr, who previously served as the Country Manager for Amazon UK and President of Amazon China, brings extensive experience from the technology sector. His leadership comes after a meeting with key regulators and government officials focused on promoting business growth.

The Department for Business and Trade is set to outline the recruitment process for a permanent CMA Chair in the coming weeks. Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, emphasized the CMA's crucial role in supporting consumers and thanked Marcus Bokkerink for his leadership since 2022.

Gurr expressed his honor in taking on this role during a pivotal time, aiming to foster business investment and economic growth while ensuring effective competition and consumer protection.

The government plans to consult on a new growth-focused Strategic Steer for the CMA, reinforcing the commitment to prioritize growth across all UK regulators. Reynolds acknowledged Bokkerink's successful tenure, which included strengthening CMA governance and enhancing transparency and engagement with stakeholders.
