The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has unveiled its draft annual plan for 2024-2025, continuing its long-term strategy aimed at promoting competitive markets and protecting consumers in the UK. This plan is a response to the evolving economic landscape and the new responsibilities granted to the CMA through the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Bill.

The CMA's mission is to ensure that consumers have access to fair deals and choices, while also fostering an environment where businesses can innovate and thrive. The draft plan reflects the CMA's commitment to enhancing the UK economy's productivity and sustainability by tackling unfair practices and maintaining competitive market conditions.

Key updates in the draft plan include preparations for the new powers under the DMCC Bill, which will allow the CMA to directly impose financial penalties for breaches of consumer law and regulate entities with significant market power in digital markets. The CMA is focused on being ready to implement these powers effectively once the legislation is enacted.

Additionally, the CMA's areas of focus have been updated to include advancements in labor markets, artificial intelligence, and housing, showcasing the agency's adaptability to current market challenges. Marcus Bokkerink, chair of the CMA, emphasized the agency's ongoing commitment to delivering value for taxpayers and ensuring that its strategies yield positive outcomes for consumers and businesses alike.

The CMA is inviting feedback on its draft annual plan until January 29, 2024, and will continue to engage with various stakeholders to refine its focus areas. The final version of the annual plan is expected to be published in spring 2024.
