The profitability of organic farmers in the Netherlands is under significant pressure, as they struggle to recoup the costs associated with sustainable production. This trend marks a departure from previous years, where farmers under non-organic sustainability labels were generally able to cover their costs.

According to the Agro-Nutri Monitor conducted by ACM, while farmers adhering to other sustainability labels can recoup their costs, 60% of organic farmers report that their revenues do not fully cover their expenses. The study examined various agricultural products, including potatoes, tomatoes, and milk, revealing that larger agricultural businesses tend to earn higher margins than smaller ones.

ACM has provided the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN) with a set of recommendations aimed at improving the sustainability of the food chain. These include reducing the price gap between conventional and organic products, promoting a limited number of recognizable sustainability labels, and encouraging collaborations among producers to enhance bargaining power.

ACM's recommendations also emphasize the need for an integral strategy from the ministry to address the limited consumer willingness to pay for sustainable products, which remains a significant barrier to achieving a full-scale sustainability transition.

In light of these findings, ACM has initiated the fifth Agro-Nutri Monitor to further investigate why organic and other sustainable farmers are unable to recoup their sustainability costs.
