In 2024, the French competition authority imposed over €1.4 billion in fines and examined a record 295 mergers, highlighting its commitment to tackling anticompetitive practices.

In 2024, the Autorité de la concurrence, France's competition authority, made significant strides in enforcing antitrust laws, issuing 11 key decisions and imposing fines exceeding €1.4 billion. This marked the second-highest total of fines in its history, reflecting a strong commitment to combating anticompetitive behavior.

Among the notable decisions was the sanctioning of Google for failing to comply with commitments related to press rights, resulting in a €250 million fine. Other significant fines included €611 million against manufacturers in the household appliances sector and €470 million in the low-voltage electrical equipment sector. The authority also addressed anticompetitive agreements in the airline industry, specifically between Air Antilles and Air Caraïbes.

In terms of merger control, the Autorité reviewed a record 295 transactions, a 10% increase from the previous record in 2021. This surge was particularly evident in the food retail sector, with several decisions regarding the sale of Casino stores. The authority also cleared various significant transactions across diverse sectors, including toy retailing, audiovisual, animal nutrition, online gambling, and aeronautics.

The Autorité maintained an active advisory role, issuing eight opinions on various sectors, including electric vehicle charging infrastructure and generative artificial intelligence. This proactive approach aims to enhance economic efficiency and consumer protection while addressing emerging market challenges.

Overall, the €1.4 billion in fines contributes directly to the French State budget, underscoring the authority's role in promoting fair competition and safeguarding consumer interests.
