The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has initiated a follow-up investigation into Wizz Air to verify the airline's compliance with commitments made as part of a 2019 competition supervision procedure. This investigation comes after Wizz Air agreed to a compensation package worth approximately 250 million HUF and several specific measures mandated by the GVH.
In the summer of 2019, the GVH concluded a competition supervision procedure that uncovered various misleading practices related to Wizz Air's Wizz Flex ticket service. As a result, Wizz Air offered commitments that were accepted by the GVH, which required the airline to fulfill them.
Wizz Air's commitments included compensating consumers who used the Wizz Flex service since 2010, with the total compensation amounting to around 250 million HUF. The airline was required to credit this amount to consumers' Wizz accounts, allowing them five years to use it or request cash by providing their bank account details. After five years, any unutilized credits would be donated to the SOS Children's Village Foundation.
Additionally, Wizz Air committed to improving its information practices related to the Wizz Flex service, ensuring clarity in its content, and implementing IT developments to facilitate a more consumer-friendly experience. The airline also pledged to launch a targeted educational campaign regarding air passenger rights.
The GVH emphasizes the importance of companies fulfilling their commitments as mandated in its decisions, and it will thoroughly examine compliance. Failure to meet these obligations or provide adequate proof may result in significant fines imposed by the GVH.
Currently, the GVH is conducting several competition supervision procedures against Wizz Air. On January 31, 2025, the GVH announced that the airline had withheld essential information regarding free online check-in, leading to additional costs for passengers. Wizz Air acknowledged this issue and agreed to provide cash compensation to thousands of consumers, totaling over 80 million HUF. The GVH will also monitor the execution of this recent commitment through its follow-up investigation.
