Majority of Spanish Households Use Multiple Paid Streaming Platforms

A recent report by the Spanish Competition Authority reveals that 58.1% of households with internet access subscribe to paid audiovisual content platforms, with Netflix being the most popular choice.

The Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) has published findings on the consumption of paid audiovisual content in Spain, indicating that 58.1% of households with internet access utilize such platforms as of mid-2023.

Among these households, Netflix is the leading platform, used by 40% of users, followed by Amazon Prime Video at 22% and Movistar+ at 13%. The report also highlights that 57.8% of users subscribe directly to these platforms, while 40.7% access content through bundled services from their internet providers, and 19.4% share credentials with family or friends.

In terms of platform usage, 35.8% of households use only one paid service, while 25.9% use two, 18.6% use three, and 19.7% use four or more. The data also reveals significant differences in viewing habits based on age, with younger individuals spending more time on video-sharing platforms compared to older adults who prefer traditional television.

The CNMC's findings are based on a semi-annual survey conducted in the second quarter of 2023, which included responses from 5,217 households and 9,095 individuals, providing a comprehensive view of consumer behavior in various sectors, including telecommunications and audiovisual services.
