The Competition and Markets Authority's (CMA) Funerals Market Investigation Order 2021 has led to slower increases in funeral costs compared to inflation, with a rise in unattended funerals observed.

The CMA's annual review of the funerals market shows that funeral costs have increased by 4% on average for funeral directors operating more than 5 branches, but in real terms, costs have decreased due to higher inflation rates. The rise in unattended funerals to 11% in 2023 is attributed to cost-saving measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The CMA is closely monitoring consumer outcomes and enforcing compliance with the Order, with around 250 funeral directors failing to adhere to pricing information requirements.
