Significant Growth in 5G Mobile Traffic in Spain

The Spanish competition authority reports a 62.9% year-on-year increase in 5G mobile traffic for Q2 2025, reflecting ongoing growth in the telecommunications sector.

The Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) has released data indicating that mobile broadband traffic utilizing 5G technology surged by 62.9% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2025. This increase brought the total mobile traffic to 2.5 million terabytes, marking a 17.9% rise compared to the same quarter in 2024.

The overall telecommunications sector in Spain continues to grow, with retail revenues reaching €5.657 billion, a 1.7% increase from the previous year. Major operators such as Movistar, Vodafone, MASORANGE, and DIGI accounted for 83% of these retail revenues.

Movistar and MASORANGE reported year-on-year revenue growth of 1% and 4.2%, respectively, while DIGI experienced a remarkable growth of nearly 19% this quarter.

As of June 2025, the number of installed next-generation access (NGA) connections reached 88.1 million, a 4.8% increase from the previous year. Of these, 80.6 million were fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections, which grew by 5.8% year-on-year.

The fixed broadband sector also saw growth, with 19.3 million fixed broadband lines reported in June 2025, reflecting a 4.8% year-on-year increase. Fiber connections now represent 90.4% of all fixed broadband lines, with 18.8 million connections offering speeds of 100 Mbps or higher.

In mobile telephony, 56.2 million mobile lines (89.2% of a total of 63 million) were connected to the internet, showing a 4% year-on-year increase. Additionally, subscribers to pay television services grew by 6.8%, reaching 11.5 million.
