The Norwegian competition authority, known as Konkurransetilsynet, has successfully upheld its decision to prohibit Norva24 Vest from acquiring Vitek Miljø. This ruling was confirmed by the Competition Complaints Board, which agreed with the authority's assessment that the acquisition would reduce competitive pressure between two close rivals in the waste management sector.
Norva24 Vest operates as part of a larger group with approximately 20 branches across Norway, primarily located in the eastern, southern, and western regions. Vitek Miljø, based in Bergen, provides similar waste collection and cleaning services to a diverse range of customers.
The initial prohibition was issued in September of the previous year, prompting Norva24 Vest to appeal the decision. However, the Competition Complaints Board has now reinforced the authority's stance, highlighting that a competitive market is crucial for ensuring lower prices and higher quality services for private, public, and corporate clients.
Hans-Petter H. Hanson, the chief economist at the authority, expressed satisfaction with the board's decision, reiterating the importance of healthy competition in the market. The timeline of the case includes various notifications and procedural steps taken by the authority, culminating in the final ruling on January 31, 2025.
