The Greek Competition Authority has released findings from its mapping study in the veterinary pharmaceutical sector, specifically targeting products for sheep and goats. This research is part of a broader strategy to analyze the agricultural value chain.
The study period spans from January 2019 to June 2024, focusing on vaccines, antibiotics, and antiparasitics. It highlights that a significant portion of these veterinary products is imported and marketed in Greece by subsidiaries of foreign multinationals, primarily from Northwestern Europe.
Key findings indicate that the sales structure of importers for these veterinary products has remained relatively stable, with a notable increase in sales by 13.7% in 2023. The majority of products sold are off-patent, particularly in the antiparasitic category.
The report also discusses the sales distribution among various customer categories, revealing that most sales are directed towards veterinary pharmacies and clinics. Additionally, it notes significant price spreads, especially for vaccines, and a moderate to high concentration level in the market.
Several regulatory issues were identified, including a complex legislative framework, conflicts of interest among veterinarians, restrictions on online sales, and the near absence of parallel imports. These factors contribute to market inefficiencies and may hinder competition.
