Hungarian Competition Authority Emphasizes Importance of Compliance for Businesses

On October 8, 2025, Rigó Csaba Balázs, the president of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH), addressed the importance of compliance with competition rules at the III. Compliance Conference held at the University of Debrecen. He emphasized that businesses benefit from adhering to competition regulations and should develop compliance programs to gain a competitive edge.
Balázs noted that the GVH has provided approximately 7.4 billion HUF in fine reductions over the past decade to companies that admitted to violations and applied for leniency. The conference also marked the signing of a cooperation agreement between the GVH and the University of Debrecen, aimed at mutual knowledge sharing.
The conference's central theme was 'Compliance as a Competitive Advantage – Regulation and Economic Responsibility in Service of Competitiveness.' Balázs highlighted Debrecen's rapid development and the university's role as a catalyst for this growth, reiterating the GVH's commitment to knowledge sharing and collaboration to enhance the competitiveness of Hungarian businesses.
In his presentation, Balázs pointed out that compliance is crucial for fostering a competition-friendly corporate culture and can help prevent unintentional violations. He stated that the GVH supports corporate compliance through education and cooperation during competition supervision procedures.
Balázs also stressed the importance of active cooperation from businesses during investigations to potentially reduce or avoid fines. He mentioned that since 2014, the GVH has accepted leniency applications from 24 companies in 14 cases, resulting in significant fine reductions and job preservation.
