On June 4, 2025, at the MCC Budapest Summit on Technology and Society, Csaba Balázs Rigó, president of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH), emphasized the importance of protecting the Hungarian language as a foundation of national unity. He discussed the recent regulatory decision against Microsoft, which involved the use of 10 billion Hungarian words in the development of its AI systems.
Rigó highlighted that the GVH has been actively investigating global tech companies for nearly a decade, noting their significant impact on society and the digital ecosystem. He stressed the necessity for these companies to comply with competition and consumer protection laws, avoiding deceptive practices such as greenwashing and dark patterns.
In recent years, the GVH has imposed corrective measures on companies like Google and PayPal, while Apple and Booking.com faced substantial fines. The authority concluded investigations against major platforms like Wish and TikTok, achieving globally impactful results. In May 2024, the GVH also wrapped up proceedings against Viber, leading to the implementation of various measures by the messaging app's operator.
Rigó stated that the goal of the GVH in these proceedings is not only to impose fines but also to ensure that companies take actions that benefit Hungarian consumers and businesses. The recent decision regarding Microsoft mandates the company to train its AI systems on a well-prepared dataset based on Hungarian language, making it accessible for other AI developers as well.
He concluded that this commitment will lead to the processing of an unprecedented volume of Hungarian text by AI models, which is crucial for the cultural and linguistic sovereignty of Hungary. The preservation of the Hungarian language is essential for national unity, according to Rigó.
