The Dutch competition authority, ACM, reports a successful increase in gas storage levels, but warns of high electricity prices during calm summer evenings due to weather dependency.

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has reported a significant increase in the filling rate of Dutch gas storages, rising from 37% to 49% in June, surpassing the target of 47% set for July 1. This increase is crucial for ensuring energy supply security during the winter months when demand typically rises.

June saw considerable volatility in natural gas prices, influenced by geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict between Israel and Iran, which raised concerns about the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The wholesale price for natural gas fluctuated from approximately 37 euros per MWh at the beginning of June to over 42 euros, before dropping back to around 33 euros per MWh.

On the electricity market, prices were heavily influenced by weather conditions. The phenomenon known as 'Heißflaute' led to significant price spikes during warm, windless evenings, with prices reaching nearly 520 euros per MWh on June 30. Consumers with dynamic energy contracts experienced these fluctuations directly on their bills, paying higher prices during peak times but benefiting from lower prices during off-peak periods.

ACM's monitoring also revealed that the number of households opting for dynamic contracts is increasing, while those with fixed contracts remain stable. The authority noted discrepancies in how dynamic suppliers manage power from households with solar panels, with some charging feed-in costs and others offering bonuses for smart management. Additionally, ACM observed that prices for variable contracts remained stable, while new fixed contracts saw a slight increase of 1-3%.

ACM continues to scrutinize energy supplier pricing, identifying several suppliers with significantly higher prices for their model contracts compared to competitors. This includes suppliers like ANWB Energie and EnergyZero, which are required to offer standard contracts even if they primarily provide dynamic options.
