The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has unveiled its Annual Plan for 2025-2026, focusing on promoting competition, protecting consumers, and driving economic growth.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has published its Annual Plan for 2025-2026, outlining its commitment to using competition and consumer protection powers to foster positive outcomes for UK consumers and businesses. This plan aligns with the UK Government's Industrial Strategy, emphasizing the importance of a robust competition regime in supporting economic growth.

The CMA aims to unlock investment in critical infrastructure and identify opportunities in key sectors that can enhance competition and innovation. The authority plans to leverage its expertise in anti-bid rigging and artificial intelligence to tackle bid rigging in public procurement, potentially saving billions for UK taxpayers and opening doors for new market entrants.

With the introduction of new powers under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act, the CMA is set to enhance consumer protection, which is vital for building business and consumer confidence. The authority intends to enforce these powers proportionately, ensuring fair competition and protecting consumer interests.

The CMA's plan also highlights its commitment to improving its operational processes based on feedback from businesses and investors. The focus on the '4Ps'—pace, predictability, proportionality, and process—aims to enhance engagement with stakeholders and streamline its functions, particularly in merger control and digital markets.

CEO Sarah Cardell emphasized the CMA's role in supporting the UK Government's growth mission, stating that strong competition and consumer protection are essential for achieving economic prosperity. The CMA's ambitious program aims to instill confidence among businesses and investors, reinforcing the UK as a favorable environment for business operations.
