The European Commission has adopted two significant decisions under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) aimed at ensuring Apple complies with its interoperability obligations. These measures are designed to facilitate better integration of third-party connected devices with Apple's iOS platform.
The first set of measures focuses on nine iOS connectivity features that are essential for connected devices, such as smartwatches, headphones, and TVs. By implementing these measures, Apple will allow device manufacturers and app developers improved access to iPhone functionalities, enabling features like displaying notifications on smartwatches, faster data transfers through peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connections, and simplified device pairing processes. This initiative is expected to enhance the performance of connected devices across various brands, fostering innovation and improving user experiences for consumers in Europe while ensuring privacy and security.
The second set of measures aims to streamline the process for developers seeking interoperability with iPhone and iPad features. This includes providing better access to technical documentation, timely updates, and a more predictable timeline for reviewing interoperability requests. As a result, developers will experience a more efficient and fair process, allowing them to offer a broader range of innovative services and hardware that work seamlessly with Apple devices.
These measures are the result of extensive consultations with Apple and feedback from third parties, following a public consultation initiated on December 18, 2024. The Commission's guidance is expected to significantly impact the development of innovative products in the European market.
