Thalia Bücher GmbH has been given the green light by the Bundeskartellamt to acquire assets of bankrupt book retailer Weltbild GmbH & Co. KG.

16.09.2024 | German competition authority

Thalia, Germany's largest brick-and-mortar book retailer, will acquire Weltbild's customer relationships, e-reader, brands, and domains, excluding the physical stores.

The merger was cleared in the first phase of merger control due to the presence of larger competitors like Amazon in both online and e-book segments, providing customers with sufficient alternatives.

Thalia's acquisition of Weltbild's assets is not expected to significantly increase its procurement volume, although it may strengthen its position in negotiations with publishers and wholesalers.

The Bundeskartellamt also examined the competitive situation in e-book sales, considering Amazon's dominant market share and the compatibility of e-books across different devices.
